Design Philosophy
The design of this book was inspired by the somewhat arduous journey of immigrants and refugees when they leave the land of their birth and immigrate to a new country. The motif that best describes their journey is a maze. Their journeys are fraught with difficulties as if they are travelling through a maze. Their starting point is the metaphorical entrance into the maze and Canada—their destination and new home.
Additionally, to make the stories personal to immigrants and to embrace their origins, Belle created a series of patterned tiles to depict each of their stories. The patterns and motifs reflect their origins and are indicative of patterns on textiles, floor or wall tiles, and embroidery art from their country of origin.
